Seats
The majority of 3 wheel double buggies start as single pushchairs. However, some models can be converted to accommodate the second seat using adapters. Certain models let you add an additional board for older children who are able to walk, but still require a little help.
For a light-weight alternative that's ideal for urban streets, look into the Joie Evalite Duo. It's easy to move and has a deep basket that has plenty of storage space. It can accommodate twins as young as birth and accommodate two car seats as well as a carrycot and seat. The seats have to face towards the front and there is no space for a shopping bag under the seat. You will require an extra sidepack.
If you like to travel off-road then the Mountain Buggy Duet is a good choice. It is a side by side model with the smallest footprint of any double buggy that is available. It has 30 different seating configurations as well as a built-in table for older children who prefer to walk and a 'cinema' mode which raises the back seat for better visibility.
The phil&teds dots are brilliant single buggys that are easily modified to accommodate two (or three!) different configurations. This is especially helpful when you have a child in a car. The frame can be affixed to a wedgie, which permits the best lie-flat position. Or car seat adapters that work with many brands.
Suspension
The quality of the suspension in a 3 wheel double buggy is vital to how it will be easy for you and your baby to push. A smooth ride is crucial as babies can feel every bump on the road, particularly if it's in rough terrain such as grass or dirt roads.
